Japanese LNG trading
The tables below gives a rough identification of LNG shipments to third-country ports by Japanese companies in . The data represents an attempt to recreate as closely as possible the results of a 2023 JOGMEC survey.
Shipments are attributed to Japanese companies when one of the following conditions is met:
-
the tanker carrying the shipment is included in a manually compiled list of tankers controlled by Japanese companies; or
-
the tanker carrying the shipment is registered in Japan; or
-
at least % of the previous cargoes carried by the tanker were delivered to Japan; or
-
the shipment originates from a project where at least % of the annual liquefaction volume is available to Japanese buyers on flexible terms, according to LSEG's LNG contracts database; or
-
at least % of the previous cargoes carried by the tanker were delivered to Japan and the shipment orignates from a project where at least % of the annual liquefaction volume is available to Japanese buyers on flexible terms.
Each shipment in the table has been assigned a score based on an average of these metrics (fleet list, Japanese flag, previous shipments to Japan and project volumes available). Shipments nearer the top of the table are more likely to have been carried out by Japanese companies than those further down.
Shipments where the tanker is part of the confirmed Japanese fleet list are signified by a 'Yes' in the jp_fleet
column.
